Symmetry art lesson

I found a great idea on Pinterest to tie in with our social studies lesson. You can find the instructions here. We struggled a little with the step by step instructions. William and I were doing our best to figure it out. What I thought would be a simple lesson was dragging out too long! In the end Evamarie looked at it and was able to figure out jut what to do! Gotta love that! Emma loves art projects so this was right up her alley!
Here is how our project turned out.

Our week with Martin Luther King Jr.

This week for our history class we covered Martin Luther King and the Civil Rights movement. We look a live class with Founder's Adademy offered through currclick. We watched a documentary on Netflix called Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.: A Perspective. Next we did some research and completed a lapbook offered from A Journey Through Learning.
The lapbook came with some craft templates. We painted the dove of peace with our fingerprints and made paper dolls.
The lapbook also came with some journal sheets, coloring sheets and games.
We have talked about King before in our homeschool but as the kids get older we are able to share a little more. Evamarie and Emma could not believe that people judged each other just based on skin color. We all held out our arms and compared our skin! None of ours are the same in our family. I hope that they will take with them the lessons that King taught and will be able to pass his ideas on to their kids one day.

Going on a Noun Hunt

Often times grammar studies can be dry and boring. Knowledge Box Central can change that with this simple, inexpensive booklet. For a mere fifty cents you can have a fun noun game to play with your child. This can be used for a variety of ages. My girls are 7 and 9 and they both enjoyed this grammar game. All you need to play is the download and a pencil. Print it out and send your children on a scavenger hunt for nouns around the house. We added a timer as an element for extra fun. Blank pages are included so you can add areas to search for nouns. This is what ours looks like:
If you want to get your own you can do so here!

Pinterest Project 1 for 2013

We have had a frame from an old mirror that broke in our garage for about 7 years. I decided to reuse the mirror frame for a chalk board in our school room. I found the directions to make your own colored chalk board paint on pinterest. All you need is: 1/2 cup acrylic paint , 1 tablespoon unsanded grout (this can be purchased at most hardware/home improvement stores), mixing cup or bowl, spoon, paint brush (we used a foam brush) Mix the paint and grout together until all lumps are out.
Paint away! This is how it turned out!
In the old frame and ready to hang in the classroom!
